Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distillation Head, 250mL, Solvent, Modified, 24/40 Inner Joint On Take-Off. Designed to maintain distilled solvents in an inert atmosphere. Top of main vapor tube is open and an additional vapor tube has been added to decrease risk of pressure buildup. Upper sampling port has a 4mm PTFE stopcock with a 14/20 outer joint for use with CG-3022 septa. Lower drain is centered to allow total drainage of storage head. Double oblique 2mm bore PTFE stopcock on the 250 through 1000mL sizes allows for removal of distilled solvent or return to flask. The 250mL size has a 4mm double oblique stopcock. Both the uptake tube and top outer joints are 24/40, while the take-off tube is supplied with a 24/40 inner joint.**Design suggested by Dr. A.K. Sublimation Apparatus, 50mL, Complete. Two-piece sublimer consisting of an upper water cooled condenser and lower flat bottom flask. Sublimate is collected on the inner wall of the condenser. The two components are assembled by a grease-free o-ring seal which permits the components to be gently separated for maximum product recovery. When condenser is inverted, the top vacuum connection serves as a funnel for convenient product removal. Complete apparatus consists of a condenser, flask, Viton o-ring and CG-150 Stainless Steel clamp.

Vapor flows upward freely through the large vapors holes to the condenser. Distillate flow is directed using the valve to either the receiving flask or back to the reactor. Control valve is either a 0-4mm or a 0-12mm PTFE with a 1/2¿ or 3/4¿ OD distillate takeoff for use with CG-1975 compression fittings and TFE tubing. Trap to fit AF-0350-01 90L/min Pump, Airfree, Schlenk. Designed to fit between the vacuum pump and the upper cart shelf on the AF-0300-01 cart to prevent oil from being drawn into the vacuum line. Offset inlet and outlet permits installation as illustrated. All sizes of the trap are fitted with a 4mm Airfree valve to allow the equalization of pressure when the pump is shut down while still having the line portion remain evacuated. Arms on all sizes have 1" OD glass tubing. Requires two AF-0300-11 hose clamps for installation.
